LET’S EAT OUT!, a McDonald’s children’s book, was written by John Jones and illustrated by Herb Ruud with nostalgic 1960’s-style drawings, in color and black and white. Great images of the vintage drive-in restaurant and old automobiles! The colorful cover shows the golden arches with a sign, “Wonderful Hamburgers.”

Published by Melmont Publishers, Inc. in 1965, it celebrated McDonald’s Restaurants’ 10th anniversary and was used as a promotional tool. It was sold to schools and libraries as a learning aid for children and distributed by McDonald’s Restaurant owner-operators. The story is about an American family, Tom and his sister, Sue, who take their German friend, Hans, on a family trip to the new McDonald’s Restaurant. Everyone is awed by the process of mass-producing food. There is also a history lesson on the multi-cultural origins of the hamburger. The book ends with how the McDonald’s brand became successful.

The book is one of the rarest of the vintage McDonald’s collectibles since so few of these fragile throwaway items survived. It measures 7.25 inches x 9.25 inches x 0.25 inches. This book is in very good condition, with some yellowing due to age, and a few slight scuffs. The main flaw shows one page with a blue crayon mark and another page has a two inch tear at the bottom. Otherwise, there are no loose, dog-eared, or missing pages. The binding is good. The edges and spine show light wear. The cover has chipped areas and tiny, faint stains, yet it still retains its rich colors, as can be seen in the photographs.

The richly colorful cover and illustrations make this piece of advertising memorabilia the perfect collectible to display in your collection.
