A PAPERWEIGHT and a DRINK COASTER that were created for the advertising campaign used in 1976 at SAMBO’S RESTAURANTS to commemorate the AMERICAN REVOLUTION BICENTENNIAL of 1776-1976.
The PAPERWEIGHT is an octagonal shape that measures 4 inches in diameter x ¾ inch high. The text reads “Sambo’s Restaurants” on the bottom and “American Revolution Bicentennial 1776-1976” on the top. The design appears to be a round red, white, and blue coaster that has been encircled with pieces of natural white and teal mother-of-pearl or alabaster sea shells, all of which are embedded in clear hard Lucite plastic.
It is in very good condition; the cream-colored felt on the back is clean with minor yellowing on the circumference; the top of the paperweight shows hairline scratches that cannot be felt when holding this piece but are only visible when viewing it close-up. The top of the paperweight actually feels quite smooth.
The paper DRINK COASTER is round and has a patriotic red, white, and blue design that is on the front of the coaster only. The text reads “Sambo’s has it 10 c (cents).” It measures about 3 ¼ inches in diameter. It is in very good condition, with a small ¾ inch dark stain on the right hand side.
Both vintage items are used but they are extremely scarce, and make an ideal find for the collector of advertising from either Sambo’s Restaurants or the American Revolution Bicentennial 1776-1976.
